pieceID

format: number (####) or number (####.#), leading zeros not used

A unique identifier for each entry in the database. Each entry has a single PDF file associated with it. This field is used internally by the database.

Once a number is assigned to an entry, that number never changes.

Each piece has an entry with a major number: e.g., 1 or 314

The major number entry (####) for a piece will have the main collection of parts:

If there are additional parts that were published separately such as Conductor, F French Horn Parts, C Piccolo Parts, Parts people have written, or Contributed Parts, these will be added as "Add-On Entries" (####.#):

Note: If a physical sheet of music has more than 1 piece of music on it, each piece of must will have its own unique major number. If this occurs, a unique major number is assigned for each piece, and a note is put in the libNotes field stating that there are multiple pieces on the sheet. For example, pieces:

format: YES/NO

title

format: text

The title of the piece.

If the title is very long, it may be entered here in a shortened form.

If the title begins with "the" or "an" this is put at the end (i.e., "The Booster" becomes "Booster, The".)

See also titleUnedited.

filenameForWebsite

format: filename (no spaces, ends in ".pdf")

The filename of the PDF file containing the sheet music. Each piece in the library has exactly one PDF file associated with it.

isPrintPlay

format: YES/NO

Original music for band from the 1880-1923 era generally has horn parts written in Eb and piccolo parts in Db. A Print & Play piece has these parts tranposed onto F horn and C Piccolo. Bass Clarinet parts may also be added. For a modern band, you can essentially just "print" the piece and then "play" it.

Default setting is NO, unless the piece has had the extra parts added.

keywords

format: text

This is a list of keywords separated by commas. The keywords themselves have no spaces in them. The first keyword listed indicates the type of piece (e.g., march).

The BandMusicPDF project's librarians try to stick to the following list of keywords:

animals, aviation, circus, college, nationalistic, dance, fillmore, foxtrot, indian,
march, military, oddity, onestep, patriotic, rag, slippery, smear, triumphal, trombone,
twostep, waltz, ethnic, expositions, fairs, flag, gallop, greatwar, inventions, military,
newspaper, polka, ragtime, religious, season, section, serviceclub, solo, song, states,
transportation, trombonesmear

Also if a piece is a solo feature for a particular instrument, that instrument name will be listed as a keyword as well:

clarinet, trumpet, flute, trombone, horn, tuba, oboe, cornet, euphonium, baritone, xylophone, marimba

Special Tool: Get List of Keywords Currently In Use.

gradeLevel

format: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 (grade level as per the American Band College)

This is left blank if the grade is not known.

We've consulted the Grade Level Chart published by American Band College to determine the difficulty level of each piece.

Observation:
For the most part, difficulty levels depend on Solo/First Clarinet and Solo/First Cornet parts, (occasionally Piccolo and Baritone parts as well.) During this time period, most of the remaining parts were less demanding. Consider that many town bands had their finest musicians on Solo/First Clarinet and Solo/First Cornet, Piccolo and Baritone, while other parts were covered by less experienced members, including the youngest performers. Also included in the evaluation is the complexity of the musical ideas, counterpoint, etc.
