Frequently Asked Questions
This page contains answers to frequently asked questions.
Q. What kind of band does BandMusic PDF refer to?
A. It refers to the concert or marching band during the time of Sousa and
others, sometimes called a "Military Band." The music was published to
accommodate a balance of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. According
to one example of a published cover page, pieces were written to sound full with
a minimum of 23 to 26 players for a basic "Military Band" set of music. A "Full
Military Band" set containing more parts was also available, as was a set of
saxophone parts, sold separately.
Q. Why are you making this music available free?
A. These works are part of our musical heritage and we want to preserve and
make them available today.
Q. How do I get the music and how do I print it?
A. Enter the "View/Browse/Search" pages after accepting
responsibility for copyright observance, then download and print using Adobe
Reader.
Q: Does this site requrie require cookies?
A: Yes. We use cookies to ensure that visitors first agree to our terms of
use.
Q: Are cookies placed on my computer as a reuslt result of visiting
BandMusic PDF?
A: Yes. In order to ensure that visitors first agree to our terms of use we
use a cookie. After someone has agreed to the terms of use, we place a cookie on
their computer which we can check each time they request a page from our
website.
Q. Why do I need to click on "I agree" in order to view, search
or browse music here?
A. It is our clear intention to observe copyright laws and to encourage
others to do the same. We list the year of publication and name of the composer
so musicians outside the US can determine the copyright status of each piece in
their local area. See the Composer Info spreadsheet to find the death year of a
composer (if known to us) to further aid in determining the copyright situation
if outside the US. Just as in the real world it is the site visitor's
responsibility to know and observe applicable copyright restrictions.
Q. What kinds of music are on the site?
A. BandMusic PDF Library contains only vintage music, dating from the late
19th into the early 20th century. It reflects the band literature available at
the time, mostly marches and dances from that period. Currently the files
contain mostly March size format. Later on, there will be concert music as well
- music transcribed from great orchestral and operatic literature and a few
concert works written especially for band. Since the music was played by town
bands, it reflects the taste and needs of audiences, leaders and musicians of
the day.
Q. What kinds of music are not on BandMusic PDF?
A. There is no music here that is currently under copyright in the USA.
Note that there may be later copyrighted editions or arrangements of some of
these pieces that are currently available.
Q. I need Bass Clarinet parts and they are not included most of the time.
What to do?
A. Choose a substitute part from: Tenor Sax, treble clef Bass, Tenor Horn,
Euphonium TC, or third Trombone TC, whichever is most suitable for your Bass
Clarinetist to cover. It's a judgment call. Another option would be to
transcribe a new part from Bassoon or Baritone Sax, formatting it with correct
clef and transposition for the Bb instrument. Use a similar technique for other
parts desired.
